"What You Hear" $20 Essay Contest

A winner could not be determined for the essay contest. Only one entry was received by an anonymous party. As a result the contest will be held again next year. The contest will run from 12-15-2010 until 2-15-2011and will be expanded to include “Your Best Wipeout”. So, all you writers out there get your entries in for the “What You Hear” or “Your Best Wipeout” essay contest. The rules are the same for either essay. Below is the anonymous entry received from 2010.

Creaks and groans of trees warming in early morning sun
A distant howl of the highway that brought me here for skiing fun
The sound of my breath moving with time
A light clatter of branches, sounds like a wind chime

2009-2010 Ski Season Recognition

Another remarkable XC ski season has quickly come to an end. Thanks to the DNR for a great job grooming Zillmer trails. I skied at Zillmer nearly every day this winter and conditions were as good or better than expected every time, even after the warm-ups and rain. Awesome!

I also swung by Greenbush several times and, as usual, the volunteers did an awesome job grooming the trails. The one thing I missed was a night ski on the new lighted section of the trails - maybe next year. Read more about the brown trail lighting project at www.greenbushusa.com.

This year also saw the inception of a Twitter based ski trail condition update service for Greenbush and Zillmer trails. Thanks to Mike, Julie, Dave, Robin, and ‘Skime’ for your participation. Your ski reports were viewed about 160 times each week. I’m sure your ski trail reports were helpful to other cross country skiers in the area and were much appreciated by all.

Trail Reporters Needed For Zillmer & Greenbush Trail Systems

Volunteer trail reporters are needed for both Zillmer and Greenbush trail systems. Help other skiers by providing Zillmer ski trail condition reports and Greenbush ski tail condition reports. IT'S EASY! Find out how to get started.

For the 2010-2011 ski season I'm attempting to expand the group of like minded XC skiers willing to post short trail condition reports for Zillmer trails and Greenbush trails via Twitter. Reports may be sent from a cell phone or from any computer. Everyone’s reports will be available on the Zillmer trails and Greenbush trails pages at this site. Find out more here.

As time permits I 'll be adding these additional features to help keep you informed:

  1. Daily email updates from www.greenbushtrails.com. Receive an email once a day from greenbushtrails.com when a ski trail report contains a rating of very good(4), Excellent(5) or "Just Groomed".
  2. Receive a Twitter tweet (text message) once a day on your mobile phone from " greenbushtrails " or " zillmertrails " when a ski trail report contains a rating of very good(4), Excellent(5) or "Just Groomed".

If you have any other suggestions or comments, please send feedback.
